Why Arabic breaks in PDF form fillers

Arabic letters change shape with their position in a word and join to their neighbours, and the line runs right to left. Many PDF tools, Adobe Acrobat's Fill & Sign among them at the time of writing, skip that step and write each letter on its own, so a typed name comes out as separate, sometimes reversed letters. Others refuse to save Arabic at all, because the standard PDF fonts contain no Arabic letters.

This tool lets your browser, which handles Arabic correctly, draw the text exactly as you see it on screen, and places that on the page. Underneath, it adds the same words as an invisible text layer in an embedded Arabic font, the way scanned PDFs carry their recognised text, so the result can still be selected, searched and copied as real Arabic.

Why we built this tool

Use it to fill in government, university, bank and job application forms that arrive as plain PDFs, to add a name, an address or a date in Arabic, or to put a tick in a box. English and numbers work too, and English goes in as ordinary PDF text.

The PDF is read and written in your browser; nothing is uploaded. It adds text on top of the page; it does not fill a form's built-in fields or check them, so place each answer where the form expects it.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Add one line per box: name, then ID number, then date, each as its own item, so each can be placed precisely.
  • Make the text the size of the form's printed labels by dragging the item's corner; text that is too small is hard to read once printed.
  • Zoom your browser out a little on long forms to see a whole page while placing text.
  • Open the saved file in a different reader (your phone's, for example) to check it before you send it.

To add your signature as well, use Sign PDF, which writes Arabic the same way. Why Arabic breaks in other apps is explained in Arabic letters disconnected or reversed?.

Frequently asked questions

Can I select and copy the Arabic in the saved PDF?

Yes. The visible text is a picture of what you typed, joined correctly, and an invisible copy of the same text in an Arabic font sits under it, so selecting, searching and copying give back exactly what you typed.

Does it fill the form's own fields?

No. It places text on top of the page, which works on any PDF, including scanned forms with no fields.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is opened and saved in your browser. The first time, the page downloads an Arabic font from this site to embed in the file.
