Signing a picture of a document

Plenty of forms never arrive as PDFs. A school permission slip photographed on a phone, a scanned delivery note, a screenshot of an agreement: all of them are images, and all of them need a signature in the right box. This tool places your signature, and optionally the date or your name, onto the image exactly where you put it, and saves the result at the image's original resolution.

Your signature can come from a photo of it on paper or be drawn on screen. A photographed signature is cleaned first: the tool compares each pixel with the brightness of the paper around it, makes the paper transparent even where the lighting was uneven, and crops tightly to the ink, so the signature sits on the form like real ink rather than as a grey rectangle. What you get is an image of your signature on the document, the same as signing a printout and scanning it, not a certificate-based digital signature.

Why do it in your browser

A signed form is a small bundle of personal data: your signature, your name, often an address or an ID number on the form itself. Uploading that to a free online editor hands all of it to a stranger's server.

This tool runs entirely on your device. The image is opened and edited by your browser, the signed copy is written straight to your downloads, and your signature is remembered only if you ask, and then only in this browser.

Tips

  • Photograph your signature on plain white paper in good light; a dark pen gives the cleanest result.
  • Adjust the Remove background slider until the paper disappears but thin strokes stay.
  • Save as PNG for a scanned form with text, JPG for a large photo where file size matters.
  • To sign an iPhone HEIC photo, convert it with HEIC to JPG first.

Quick start: signing an image

  1. Choose the image to sign: a scan, a photo of a form or a screenshot.
  2. Upload a photo of your signature or draw one.
  3. Click Place signature, then click where it should go on the image.
  4. Drag, resize or rotate it until it fits the box.
  5. Optionally add the date or your name or initials.
  6. Choose the format and click Download signed image.

For PDF documents, use Sign PDF, which keeps the document's text selectable. To add a caption or label rather than a signature, use Add Text to Image.

Frequently asked questions

Does the signed image keep its original quality?

Yes. The preview is scaled to fit the screen, but the saved file is drawn at the original width and height.

Can I use the same signature again later?

Tick Remember this signature and it is kept in this browser on this device, ready the next time you open Sign Image or Sign PDF. Untick it, or click Forget it, to remove it.
