Compress an image to 50 KB

Add your photo below; the target is already set to 50 KB. The tool searches for the highest quality that fits and only makes the picture smaller if quality alone is not enough.

Where you meet a 50 KB limit

Exam registrations, job applications and government forms often ask for a passport-style photo or a scanned signature of 50 KB or less, sometimes with a minimum too (for example 20 to 50 KB). They usually state the size in pixels as well, such as 600 × 600.

Do it in this order

  • Crop first if the form wants a particular shape: a square photo, or a signature with little white space around it. Crop Image does that.
  • Set the pixel size the form gives with Resize › Custom Size. A phone photo of 4000 pixels across will not fit in 50 KB at a decent quality; at 600 pixels it fits easily.
  • Keep JPG as the format. PNG has no quality setting, so to fit it the tool can only make the picture smaller.
  • Press Compress and check the line under the result: it says the quality and size it chose.

If the form also has a minimum

Some forms reject files under, say, 20 KB. If the result is too small, raise the target (for example to 45) and compress again: the tool will use a higher quality.

Frequently asked questions

Will my face still be clear at 50 KB?

At a typical form size such as 600 × 600 pixels, yes: 50 KB allows a good JPG quality. It is large photos squeezed into 50 KB that turn blocky.

Does it work for a signature?

Yes. Crop the signature closely first; a small picture of dark lines on white needs very few kilobytes.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device.
