How to Increase the Volume of an Audio File
A recording that is too quiet is frustrating — you crank your speakers to hear it and then the next sound blasts you. What boosting does
Volume boosting amplifies the audio — it multiplies the signal so quiet sounds become louder. That is genuinely useful for a recording made too far from the microphone or with the input level set too low. But there is a hard ceiling: audio has a maximum level, and pushing past it causes clipping.

The clipping trap
This is the one thing to understand. When you amplify audio past its maximum level, the peaks get flattened — "clipped" — and that flattening sounds like harsh, crackly distortion. Worse, clipping is permanent: once the peaks are squared off, no tool restores them. To avoid it:
- Boost gradually and listen, especially to the loudest parts.
- Stop before distortion appears. If louder passages start to crackle or sound harsh, you have gone too far — back off.
- Aim for comfortably audible, not maximum. The goal is a usable level, not the loudest possible file.
Boosting vs. normalizing
There is a smarter approach than raw boosting when it is available: normalizing raises the audio so its loudest peak sits just under the maximum, making it as loud as possible *without* clipping. Straight boosting applies a fixed gain regardless of peaks, so it can overshoot. If your tool offers normalization, it is often the safer way to get a louder file.
When boosting cannot help
Boosting raises everything — including background noise and hiss. A quiet recording with a lot of background noise gets *louder noise* along with louder speech. If the underlying recording is poor, boosting reveals its flaws rather than fixing them. The best fix is always a better original recording.
